Local Abruzzese LNG: a sustainable and responsible energy solution.

The new Collesanto development project – Small Scale LNG – for the production of liquefied natural gas supports the energy transition for a cleaner Abruzzo.
In name of the environmental responsibility, Small Scale LNG will lead to improvements in the field of the energy efficiency with the aim of contributing to the decarbonization and production of gas primarily for local consumption. The project will also promote the development of vehicles powered by alternative fuels for road and maritime transport, as well as industrial use—see, for example, the Atessa industrial district, the most important in central Italy.

LNG

Small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) development is supported by a positive institutional and strategic framework at both global and national levels, with the long-term goal of reducing local and atmospheric emissions.
The importance of LNG is also highlighted in the 2030 Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC), the key tool for the energy and environmental policy towards decarbonization.

Using LNG instead of traditional fuels allows for a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions—20% less in road transport and 25% less in maritime transport—while practically eliminating emissions of other pollutants such as NOx, SOx, VOCs, and fine particulate matter, which are major threats to air quality.

The reservoir

The Collesanto reservoir is located in Abruzzo, within the municipality of Bomba, in the province of Chieti. It is a 2 billion Sm³ gas reservoir discovered by AGIP (Azienda Generale Italiana Petroli) in the 1960s. The wells (MP 1 and MP 2), intended for the development and production of the reservoir, are situated in Monte Pallano, just a few kilometres from the town of Bomba, and have been already drilled and ready for operation since 2007, under a research permit granted in 2004 by the National Office for Hydrocarbons and Georesources (UNMIG) and following the approval of the related Work Programme, endorsed and certified by the Abruzzo Region, as established by the State/Regions Agreement on environmental matters. In Italy, Collesanto is the largest onshore gas reservoir not yet in production, with reserves comparable, in percentage terms, to the entire gas consumption of the Abruzzo region.

Nuovo svilluppo Collesanto
sostenibile-responsabile
Considering the complex international scenario and the persistent energy demand, Italy and Europe increasingly need gas. The new Collesanto Small Scale LNG development project by the LNEnergy companies is consistent with:

1

the objectives of the Integrated National Plan for Energy and Climate 2030 (PNIEC), the fundamental instrument for the energy and environmental policy of our Country towards decarbonization. The PNIEC, in fact, has allocated substantial resources for the construction of natural gas liquefaction infrastructures, recognizing this product as fully legitimate within the European Taxonomy as eco-sustainable projects in the logic of the Green New Deal.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

The new Collesanto “Small Scale LNG” development project by LNEnergy differs from the initial project (2009–2019), offering significant advantages in terms of technology, environmental impact, and economic benefits for the local area.
